Where is Tuvalu?

In the South Pacific between Australia and Hawaii, north of Fiji. It consists of nine atolls and islands totalling about 26 square kilometres of land, with a population of roughly 10,000 to 11,000. The capital, Funafuti, is an atoll with a lagoon and is home to around 60 percent of the country's people.

How do you get to Funafuti?

The only practical route is a Fiji Airways flight from Suva, the capital of Fiji, running about three times a week and taking around two and a half hours. It departs from Nausori airport in Suva, not from Nadi, so a night in Suva is usually unavoidable. The aircraft is small and weather disrupts the schedule, so build in spare days. There are no tourist ferries.

Do you need a visa for Tuvalu?

Nationals of most countries are granted entry on arrival, usually for about 30 days. You will need a passport valid for at least six months, a return ticket and proof of accommodation. Check Fiji's entry rules separately, since transiting through Suva is unavoidable. Requirements change, so confirm before buying tickets.

Is Tuvalu really sinking?

Yes, and not metaphorically. The country's highest point is around four and a half metres above sea level, and NASA projects that roughly half of the main Funafuti atoll will flood at high tide by 2050. The coral rock is porous, so water also rises from below in the middle of the island. Since 2024 the Falepili treaty has given up to 280 Tuvaluans a year permanent residence in Australia.

Can you get Tuvalu citizenship?

There is no citizenship-by-investment programme in Tuvalu. Any offer to sell you a Tuvaluan passport is a scam. Naturalisation exists in law but is not realistically available to newcomers, and long-term stays depend on a work contract with the government, an international organisation or a donor project.
