FAQ
When do you become a tax resident?
The common rule is 183 days in a year, but it is not the only one: many countries also look at permanent housing, your centre of vital interests and family. You can become resident faster than expected, and in two countries at once.
Can I pay tax nowhere?
In practice, no. Being resident nowhere is rare and fragile: banks demand a tax number, and your former country may keep treating you as resident until you prove otherwise.
How do I avoid paying tax twice?
Through a double tax treaty: it decides which country taxes which income and lets you credit what you already paid. Without a treaty, relief is not always available.
What is territorial taxation?
A system where only locally sourced income is taxed and foreign income is exempt or taxed only when remitted. Panama, Paraguay and Georgia work this way, and Malaysia and Thailand partly do.
Do I have to declare foreign accounts?
In most countries yes, and controlled foreign companies separately. The data arrives automatically through CRS anyway, so staying silent usually costs more than filing.
Will moving abroad lower my taxes?
Sometimes substantially, but not automatically: exit rules, exit tax, your income sources and the new country regimes all matter. Run the numbers before you move.
