Best time to visit Maputo?

The dry, cooler season from May to September is the best window, around 25C with little rain. November to March is hot and humid with downpours, and the coast can see cyclones. The sea stays warm most of the year.

How many days do you need in Maputo?

Two or three days cover the fortress, the famous railway station, the central market, the fish market and the natural history museum. The city is loved for its architecture, from Portuguese colonial to modernism and art deco, and for its seafood. From there most people head to the beaches at Tofo or Vilanculos.

Is Maputo safe?

Pickpocketing and street robbery are the main problem, particularly after dark and around the markets, so keep your phone out of sight. Do not walk at night, take a taxi. The insurgency in Cabo Delgado is far to the north, but it is still worth following national news.

Do you need a visa for Mozambique?

Mozambique has waived visas for tourists from many countries and runs an online option, but the lists and conditions have changed several times, so check what applies now. The language is Portuguese and English is limited outside hotels. Staying long term means a DIRE residence permit through work or business, and the process is slow and paperwork-heavy.
