It is Benin's official capital, but the country's energy and its airport are in Cotonou, about an hour away. Porto-Novo is low-rise and quiet, worth a day for the Honme royal palace museum, the small museums and the Afro-Brazilian architecture. Tourist infrastructure is thin, and you notice it.

Best time to visit Benin?

The dry season, roughly November to February, is the most comfortable stretch. Heavy rain falls from April to July, with a shorter wet spell in autumn. It stays hot and humid year round.
