Dili is a small, quiet capital with no tourist crowds: the waterfront, the Cristo Rei statue, the resistance museum and a couple of markets fill a day or two. The real draw is diving and snorkelling around Atauro Island, one of the most species rich reef areas anywhere. Expect modest infrastructure and a limited choice of hotels.

When is the best time to visit Timor-Leste?

The dry season runs roughly May to November and is best for diving and mountain trips. December to April brings rain and washed out roads. It is hot year round, though hill towns like Maubisse are noticeably cooler.
