Is Antananarivo worth visiting?

It is usually the way into Madagascar rather than the destination: a loud, hilly, traffic-choked city with a characterful upper town and views over Lake Anosy. Two days covers the Rova palace, Ambohimanga and the Analakely market. Everything people actually come for - parks, lemurs, baobabs - starts outside the capital.

Is Antananarivo safe?

The centre is manageable by day, but pickpocketing and street robbery are common, especially near markets and in crowded streets. Do not walk at night, and keep phones and jewellery out of sight. Book taxis and transfers through your hotel rather than flagging them down.

When is the best time to visit Madagascar?

The dry season, roughly April to October, is the easy window: roads are passable and the weather is predictable. January to March brings rain and cyclones, and some routes close entirely. Antananarivo itself is cooler than the coast because of its altitude, with genuinely fresh nights.
