How much does a trip to Bhutan cost?

Bhutan is expensive mainly because of the Sustainable Development Fee, charged per night of your stay and separate from hotels and flights. The rate has been revised several times and currently sits on the order of a hundred dollars a night for most foreign visitors, with different terms for Indian nationals. Check the rate in force on the official visa portal before booking.

Can you travel Bhutan independently?

Visas are now issued online and there is no formal requirement to buy a group tour, but in practice almost everyone goes through a licensed local operator who arranges the visa, the fee and a guide. A guide is required for treks and for most dzongs and monasteries. Walking around Thimphu itself is unrestricted.

Best time to visit Bhutan?

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) give the clearest skies and host the main tsechu festivals. The summer monsoon keeps the mountains under cloud, while winter is dry and sunny but cold at altitude. Thimphu sits at roughly 2,300 metres, so evenings are cool all year.

Can foreigners move to Bhutan?

Realistically no. Bhutan does not issue residence permits for relocation, does not sell land to foreigners and keeps citizenship tightly closed. Work is largely limited to occasional contracts with international projects or teaching. Treat Bhutan as a place to visit rather than a place to settle.
