Monotributo in Argentina: a complete 2025 guide to registration and its benefits for freelancers and entrepreneurs

What is Monotributo in Argentina?

Monotributo is Argentina's simplified tax regime, designed for freelancers, the self-employed and small business owners. It rolls several taxes and social contributions - income tax, VAT, pension contributions and health insurance (Obra Social) - into a single monthly payment. The result is a far simpler and more transparent way for small businesses to stay tax-compliant.

Why register for Monotributo?

Signing up for Monotributo brings several advantages:

  • Legal income: your activity is formally recognised and you can issue invoices.
  • Health insurance (Obra Social): access to the healthcare system for you and your family.
  • Pension contributions: participation in the state pension system.
  • A formal footing for your business or services: the ability to sign contracts and bid for tenders.
  • Proof of income: essential for obtaining residency, opening bank accounts and applying for loans.

Who can become a Monotributista?

You can register for Monotributo if you are:

  • an individual providing services or selling goods;
  • a member of a workers' cooperative;
  • an heir continuing the activity of a deceased Monotributista.

You cannot register for Monotributo if you are:

  • a member of a legal entity (such as an SA or SRL);
  • engaged in more than three lines of activity or operating more than three points of sale;
  • selling goods above a set price per unit (for example, ARS 85,627.66);
  • someone who has imported goods for resale in the past 12 months.

Monotributo categories

Monotributo is split into categories from "A" to "K", based on annual income, the floor space you use and how much electricity you consume. Each category sets the size of your monthly payment. In 2025, for example, the minimum payment is around USD 30 a month, while the maximum annual income allowed under the regime is roughly USD 76,523.

How to register for Monotributo

Registering for Monotributo involves the following steps:

  • Obtain a CUIT and a Clave Fiscal. The CUIT is your tax identification number, and the Clave Fiscal is the electronic key that gives you access to the online services of the AFIP tax authority.
  • Register with AFIP: visit the AFIP website and follow the registration instructions.
  • Choose a category and health insurance: work out your category based on your income and select a suitable Obra Social.
  • Pay your monthly contribution: payment is due by the 20th of each month through online services such as PagoMisCuentas or Mercado Pago.

What to do if your income or activity changes

If your income or the nature of your activity changes, you need to:

  • re-categorise: update your category within the Monotributo system;
  • deregister from Monotributo: if you stop trading, you can cancel your registration online through the AFIP website.

The benefits of Monotributo

  • Simplicity: a single fixed payment instead of several separate taxes and contributions.
  • Health insurance: access to Obra Social for you and your family.
  • Pension contributions: participation in the state pension system.
  • An on-time payment bonus: pay reliably throughout the year and you may be reimbursed one monthly payment.

Freelancers, self-employed professionals, small traders and producers whose annual turnover fits inside a category limit. You need a CUIT tax number and an address in Argentina. Once you exceed the top limit you have to move to the general regime.

The single payment has three parts: the tax component (replacing income tax and VAT), the pension contribution and mandatory health cover through an Obra Social. It is due every month, even in a month with no income.
How many monotributo categories are there?
Eleven, from A to K. Your category depends on annual turnover, and for retail or rented premises also on floor area, electricity use and rent paid. You are expected to review your category regularly.
