Jakarta is about business, malls and food rather than postcards: most travellers give it a day or two and move on to Bali, Yogyakarta or Komodo. Best time to visit Jakarta?

May to September is the driest stretch, while November to March brings heavy rain and regular flooding in parts of the city. It is hot and humid all year, around thirty degrees, so plan walking for the morning. Traffic gets dramatically worse in the rain.

The traffic is legendary, so locals live on apps like Grab and Gojek, and a motorbike taxi often beats a car. The MRT and TransJakarta busway both work well along central corridors. Walking is awkward: pavements are far from universal.
