April to June and September to October. July and August bring 35C heat, heavy crowds and shuttered family trattorias around Ferragosto. Winter is cheap and calm, just short on daylight.

How many days do you need in Rome?

Three days cover the essentials: Colosseum and Forum, the Vatican, and the historic centre on foot. Four or five let you slow down and add Villa Borghese or an evening in Trastevere. Book Colosseum and Vatican tickets online in advance.

Is Rome safe?

Violent crime is rare, but pickpocketing is a genuine issue around Termini station, bus 64, metro line A and the crush at the Trevi Fountain. Walking the centre and Trastevere at night is generally fine.
