The Svalbard digital nomad visa is a permit that lets a foreigner live in the Svalbard region of Norway while working remotely.
Visa requirements
- Who can apply. A foreigner working remotely; the self-employed visa is available to sole owners of their own business who pay taxes on its profit themselves.
- Validity. The Svalbard visa can be issued for life. If you spend more than 183 days on Svalbard, you must pay Norwegian taxes.
- Minimum income. Stable profit of at least NOK 341,372 per year before tax - roughly €29,000. The threshold is set in kroner as 2.5 × the base amount G (G = NOK 136,549 from 1 May 2026) and is recalculated every May.
- Taxes. 22% income tax.
Cost of living
A family of four spends about €4,000 per month excluding rent. A single person spends about €1,100 per month excluding rent. Renting a one-bedroom apartment in the city centre costs about €1,000 per month.
