Can a non-resident open a bank account in Azerbaijan?
Formally yes, banks do work with non-residents, but the approach has become noticeably stricter. Russian citizens are often declined over sanctions risk, and that is each bank's own decision rather than a blanket rule. Have several options and be ready for a refusal.
Do I need a residence permit in Azerbaijan to open an account?
Not always, but resident status, a local address or employment in the country makes it much easier. Many banks require a tax identification number. Without a link to the country your choice of banks is minimal.
How do I prove source of funds in an Azerbaijani bank?
With documents: salary certificates, tax returns, sale agreements, dividend or inheritance papers. Large incoming transfers with no explanation are held until the paperwork is provided. A verbal explanation will not do.
Does CRS work in Azerbaijan?
Yes, Azerbaijan takes part in the automatic exchange of financial information. Non-resident account data goes to the country of tax residence. You cannot hide the account from your own tax authority.
