FAQ

Can a foreigner open a personal account in Moldova?
Yes, some banks open accounts for non residents on a foreign passport, but each bank has its own policy and it changes without notice. Expect questions about the purpose of the account, your source of funds and your link to the country. A refusal can come with no explanation, so check conditions with the specific bank first.
Do I need to visit Moldova in person?
Almost always yes - identification happens in branch, where you also sign the documents and collect the card. Remote onboarding for non residents is not standard practice here. Plan at least one trip and leave time for follow-up questions.
Will a non resident get a card and online banking?
Usually yes - a card, mobile banking and EUR and USD transfers are available, though the product range for non residents is narrower. Fees and minimums are higher and credit products are practically out of reach. Large transfers to the EU get manual review.
Does Moldova exchange data under CRS?
Moldova has joined international automatic exchange of tax information and the bank will ask for your tax residence. Check the current list of exchange partners before opening, as it keeps expanding. Moldova is not a way to keep an account invisible to your home tax authority.
