Personal accounts: Montenegro

An honest assessment before work starts, the quote is fixed in writing.

We assess your chances against your profile, prepare the compliance file, help you present your source of funds properly and handle communication with the bank until it decides. The final decision always rests with the bank, so no one can guarantee an opening - careful preparation simply improves the odds.

We quote the exact cost for this country after a short consultation: it depends on the bank and your residency. The quote is fixed in writing before work starts.

FAQ

Can I open a bank account in Montenegro without residency?
Some banks open accounts for non residents on a foreign passport with an in-person visit, but policies have tightened - several now ask for a residence permit or a proven link such as property, work or study. There is no single market rule and conditions differ by bank and change often. Confirm before you travel, not after you land.
What currency will the account be in?
Euro - Montenegro uses the euro unilaterally without being in the eurozone or the EU. Because of that, transfers to EU countries can be processed as international payments with fees and longer settlement. Check incoming and outgoing transfer fees before you commit.
Do I need a local tax number?
For many transactions, and certainly for buying property or working, you need a local identification number and the bank may ask for it. You get it from the tax office with your passport, as a separate step before the bank visit. Also prepare proof of address and an explanation of your source of funds.
Does CRS apply in Montenegro?
Montenegro has joined international exchange of tax information and implemented the corresponding rules, so the bank will ask for your tax residence at onboarding. Do not treat a local account as invisible to your home tax authority. Spending more than 183 days a year in the country also makes you a local tax resident.
