FAQ

Can a foreigner open a personal account in São Tomé and Príncipe?

Realistically only with a local footing - residence or work status, a local address and a visit to the branch. A tourist or a remote applicant will almost certainly be refused.

What currency is the account in?

The dobra, which is pegged to the euro. Currency controls apply and large outgoing transfers need supporting paperwork, so nothing moves quickly.

Do cards and transfers work there?

Infrastructure is limited: few ATMs, narrow card acceptance and a largely cash economy. SWIFT payments pass through a small number of correspondent banks, which adds cost and delay.

Will my account be reported to my tax authority?

São Tomé and Príncipe is not part of the broad CRS exchange network. That does not reduce your own duties - most countries require foreign accounts to be declared whether or not data is exchanged.
