Business accounts: São Tomé and Príncipe

An honest assessment before work starts, the quote is fixed in writing.

We assess your chances against your profile, prepare the compliance file, help you present your source of funds properly and handle communication with the bank until it decides. The final decision always rests with the bank, so no one can guarantee an opening - careful preparation simply improves the odds.

We quote the exact cost for this country after a short consultation: it depends on the bank and your residency. The quote is fixed in writing before work starts.

FAQ

Can a foreigner open a company account in São Tomé and Príncipe?
Technically yes for a locally registered company. But the sector is tiny - a handful of banks, limited correspondent relationships, and slow, expensive international payments. For anything cross-border it is an awkward place to bank.
Does the director have to show up in person?
In practice yes. There is no remote onboarding; documents are filed at the branch or through an attorney with a power of attorney, normally legalised and translated into Portuguese.
What does compliance ask for?
Incorporation documents, beneficial owners, source of funds and a description of the expected flows. The AML rules on paper are conventional, but the process is manual and slow, and follow-up requests are routine.
Where should the business actually bank?
Most keep the local account for payroll, taxes and local suppliers and route international money through an account in Portugal or elsewhere in the EU. Shared language and existing ties make that the standard setup.
