South Africa's digital nomad visa targets highly skilled workers, especially in the tech sector, who want to live in South Africa while working for a foreign company.

Who qualifies for the visa

The visa suits highly skilled professionals working remotely for a foreign employer - first and foremost in tech.

Requirements

  • The visa is issued for up to 36 months.
  • You need to prove an annual income of at least R650,796 - about R54,233 per month, or roughly $36,000 at the current exchange rate. The threshold is set in rand, so the dollar equivalent moves with the exchange rate. This threshold comes from the final rules that took effect in October 2024 (applications open since March 2025); the earlier draft set it higher, at R1 million.
  • The tax rate is 18% to 41%, depending on income.
