When to visit Port of Spain?

Carnival is the reason most people come, and it falls in February or March, on the two days before Ash Wednesday. The dry season runs roughly January to May, with rain after that. For Carnival, accommodation sells out and prices jump months ahead.

Is Port of Spain safe?

Downtown, Queen's Park Savannah and western areas like Woodbrook and St. Clair are fine in daylight, but the city has neighbourhoods with a serious crime reputation that visitors have no reason to enter. After dark, move by car or taxi rather than on foot. Keep valuables out of sight.

Do you need a car in Trinidad?

In Port of Spain itself, taxis and the shared maxi taxis will do. For the rest of the island a car helps a lot, and driving is on the left. Morning traffic into the capital is legendary.
