The city is small and pleasantly odd: the Ottoman Old Bazaar and the Kale fortress on one bank, and dozens of neoclassical buildings and statues from the Skopje 2014 project on the other. A day or two is plenty. Most travellers then continue to Ohrid, the country's headline destination.

Is Skopje cheap?
