Business account service in Hong Kong

What a Hong Kong bank actually checks, and what an application with real odds looks like.

Who needs a Hong Kong business account and who does not

Hong Kong remains Asia's main financial hub: free movement of capital, a Hong Kong dollar pegged to the US dollar, banks with direct access to mainland China and renminbi settlement. An account here makes sense when the business has a genuine Asian anchor: suppliers in China, clients or distributors across Asia, a trading or services company incorporated in Hong Kong itself, or a need for letters of credit and trade finance.

Now the honest part, what a Hong Kong account will not do.

  • It will not replace a European account. If your clients and contractors are in the EU and pay in euro over SEPA, a Hong Kong account adds fees and questions rather than convenience.
  • It will not deliver opacity. Hong Kong participates in automatic exchange of financial information, and every company must keep a significant controllers register available for inspection.
  • It will not rescue a shell. With no contracts, invoices, website, turnover or coherent model, rejection is a matter of time, not of bank choice.
  • It will not open in a week. At traditional banks the process runs for weeks, and any promise to the contrary is marketing.

If Hong Kong still fits after that list, everything comes down to the quality of the application. A step-by-step walkthrough is in our article Business bank account in Hong Kong in 2026.

What a Hong Kong bank checks: requirements and documents

Hong Kong banks operate under the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorist Financing Ordinance (Cap. 615), supervised by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA), and apply a risk-based approach. The regulator's position is that a bank should not refuse an applicant merely because a director is a non-resident or the business trades abroad: the application must be assessed on its merits. In practice that means building a file that leaves the bank no open questions.

  • Corporate documents: certificate of incorporation, Business Registration Certificate, articles of association, form NNC1 or NAR1, the significant controllers register, and a board resolution to open the account.
  • Identification: passports and address proof for directors, shareholders, ultimate beneficial owners and every signatory.
  • Evidence of activity: customer and supplier contracts, invoices, shipping documents, a working website, corporate email on your own domain, a description of the business model, and forecast turnover, currencies and payment countries.
  • Structure and source of funds: an ownership chart down to individuals and evidence of where the capital came from - a business sale, dividends, salary, investments.
  • A link to Hong Kong or Asia: contracts with Asian counterparties, travel, an office, staff, logistics through the region.

From the second half of 2026 major banks have been progressively tightening review standards for non-resident applicants and companies incorporated outside Hong Kong, with heightened attention to beneficial owner verification, evidence of genuine operations and source of funds. An application that would have passed two years ago may now go into additional questioning.

Traditional banks, digital banks and payment providers

Traditional banks. HSBC, Hang Seng, Bank of China (Hong Kong), China Construction Bank Asia, Standard Chartered, DBS, OCBC. Strengths: full corporate banking, trade finance and letters of credit, multi-currency accounts, and standing with counterparties. Weaknesses: typically four to twelve weeks, an in-person meeting with the signatory in most cases, and initial deposit and minimum balance requirements. HSBC, for example, sets an initial deposit of HKD 10 000 for applications made online with an appointment at a business centre.

Digital banks. Hong Kong has licensed eight: ZA Bank, ELE Bank (formerly Airstar), livi, Ant Bank, PAO Bank, Fusion Bank, WeLab and Mox. Several open business accounts remotely in days rather than weeks, with low or no balance requirements. The limits are real too: not all of them serve companies whose directors and owners are non-residents, the product range is narrower, and trade finance or complex FX is usually unavailable.

Payment providers and licensed money service operators. They issue multi-currency details quickly and without a visit, but they are not banks: deposit protection works differently, and some counterparties and tender platforms will not accept those details as a bank account. We say plainly when the job is better and more cheaply solved with such a tool, and when only a bank will do.

We pick the bank by profile rather than by ranking: payment countries, industry, owners' nationalities, expected turnover. Applying to the wrong bank costs a month and damages your record.

How account opening works: steps and timelines

  1. Case assessment, 1-3 days. We review the structure, industry, nationalities, payment geography and turnover. If the odds are poor we say so immediately and propose an alternative, rather than charging for an application we expect to fail.
  2. Bank selection, 2-5 days. We build a shortlist matched to the profile and agree the order of applications.
  3. Building the compliance file, 1-3 weeks. The longest stage, and the one that depends on you: contracts, invoices, source of funds evidence, ownership chart and a description of the business written in the bank's language.
  4. Submission, 1-5 days. We file the package with a covering business summary.
  5. Interview or meeting, 1-3 weeks. Most traditional banks want to see the signatory. We prepare you for the questions in advance.
  6. Bank's follow-up requests, 1-4 weeks. A normal part of the process. The speed and completeness of your answers directly affect the outcome.
  7. Decision and activation, four to twelve weeks in total at traditional banks. Digital banks take days or a couple of weeks. You receive the account details, online banking access, a security token and cards.

Timelines are indicative: the bank decides on its own schedule and owes no explanation. What we are accountable for is the quality of the preparation and for you knowing your odds before the work starts, not after.

How much a business account service in Hong Kong costs

ServicePrice
Hong Kong bank account opening assistance$7 000
Bank charges for account opening and maintenanceper the bank's tariff
Initial deposit and minimum balanceas required by the bank
Annual Business Registration Certificate fee for 2026/27, payment to the stateHKD 2 350 for one year, HKD 6 170 for three years

Prices are indicative and cover our work on a typical case. We confirm the exact quote in writing after a short call - you know the final number before we start. Government fees and bank tariffs are billed separately unless explicitly included.

The Business Registration Certificate fee belongs to the company rather than to the account, but it is worth budgeting if you are still incorporating in Hong Kong. Add the annual return filing, the audit and the profits tax return to your running costs: without a company in good standing a bank will neither open nor keep an account.

Why Hong Kong banks reject applications

Rejections are rarely random. These are the causes we see most often.

  • A shell company. No website, contracts, invoices or coherent model, but a fresh incorporation and a virtual address. The bank needs to see commercial activity, not a registry entry.
  • Opaque structure. Layered ownership, offshore intermediaries and nominees without a clear rationale read as an attempt to hide something.
  • No link to the region. The bank cannot see why the account has to be in Hong Kong when no clients, suppliers or logistics touch Asia.
  • High-risk exposure. Sanctioned payment geography, dual-use goods, crypto, gambling, forex, arms, cash-based precious metals.
  • Weak source of funds evidence. General statements instead of documents are the most common trigger for follow-up questions and eventual refusal.
  • Inconsistent paperwork. Different addresses across the form and the proofs, expired statements, missing apostilles and certified copies.

Two warnings worth hearing. First, a refusal stays on your record, and reapplying to the same bank after a rejection is almost always harder than a careful first application, which is why we do not fire applications at several banks at once. Second, an open account is not permanent. Banks run periodic reviews and may close an account, sometimes without a detailed explanation, if the transaction profile drifts from what was declared. Keep a backup payment channel at all times.

How we work

Assessment first, money second. We look at the structure, the industry, the owners' nationalities and the payment geography and tell you where the odds are real and where they are not. Then we match a bank to the profile, help assemble the compliance file and a business description written in the bank's language, prepare you for the interview, and handle the correspondence and follow-up requests through to a decision. The quote is fixed in writing before we start.

What we do not do: we do not guarantee approval, do not promise timelines on the bank's behalf, do not scatter applications hoping one lands, and do not take on profiles that clearly will not survive compliance. The decision always belongs to the bank - our job is to give the application a genuine chance.

FAQ

How much does a business account service in Hong Kong cost?
Our fee for assisting with a Hong Kong bank account is $7 000. The bank's own opening and maintenance charges, plus any initial deposit and minimum balance, are paid separately according to that bank's tariff. We fix the exact quote in writing after a consultation.
How long does it take to open a Hong Kong business account?
At traditional banks the process usually runs four to twelve weeks from submission: compliance review, an interview with the signatory and follow-up requests. Digital banks can open an account in days or a couple of weeks where the profile fits. Timelines are indicative and the decision rests with the bank.
Do I need to fly to Hong Kong to open the account?
Most traditional banks want to meet the signatory in person, at a branch or a business centre appointment. Some digital banks and payment providers open remotely, but not all of them serve non-residents. We confirm the exact format for your chosen bank before the work starts.
Can an offshore company open a bank account in Hong Kong?
It is possible, but the bar is higher: Hong Kong banks are most comfortable with locally incorporated companies. The regulator does not allow refusal purely because of foreign incorporation or a non-resident director, so the outcome turns on the quality of the file - real activity, a link to Asia and evidenced source of funds. We assess such cases individually.
What is the minimum deposit for a Hong Kong business account?
There is no single rule; each bank sets its own terms. As an example, HSBC applies an initial deposit of HKD 10 000 for applications made online with an appointment at a business centre. Digital banks typically have lower or no balance requirements. We verify current terms for the chosen bank before applying.
Why do Hong Kong banks reject business account applications?
The most common reasons: no evidence of real activity (no website, contracts or invoices), an opaque multi-layer ownership structure, no clear link to Hong Kong or Asia, a high-risk industry or sanctioned payment geography, unevidenced source of funds, and inconsistencies across documents. Closing those gaps is exactly what our preparation stage is for.
