Chilean citizenship by birth
A child born in Chile becomes a citizen automatically. Parents can obtain citizenship after two years of residence on temporary and permanent permits.
Chile is a stable, safe country with a developed economy, a high standard of living, free education and affordable healthcare. A child born on Chilean territory automatically becomes a citizen of the country.
Legal grounds for citizenship
Citizenship by birth in Chile is granted to every child born on the country's territory, whatever the status of the parents. The legality of the parents' status at the moment of birth makes no difference.
The route for parents
Parents of a citizen child can apply for a residence permit straight after the birth. After a year on the residence permit they can apply for permanent residence. Once they have two years of residence on the temporary and permanent permits combined, parents can apply for citizenship - and they can do so until the child comes of age.
Siblings and other relatives
Siblings of a Chilean citizen child do not receive citizenship automatically: they can apply for a residence permit through family reunification, obtain permanent residence after a year of residence, and then citizenship by naturalization after two years of residence (temporary and permanent permits combined). Grandparents and other close relatives can obtain a residence permit through family reunification, and citizenship no earlier than two years after moving to Chile.
