Business accounts: Brazil

An honest assessment before work starts, the quote is fixed in writing.

We assess your chances against your profile, prepare the compliance file, help you present your source of funds properly and handle communication with the bank until it decides. The final decision always rests with the bank, so no one can guarantee an opening - careful preparation simply improves the odds.

We quote the exact cost for this country after a short consultation: it depends on the bank and your residency. The quote is fixed in writing before work starts.

FAQ

Can a foreign company open a bank account in Brazil?
Directly, it is very hard. The standard route is a Brazilian company with a CNPJ number; foreign shareholders must appoint a resident attorney-in-fact, and foreign investment is registered in the Central Bank's system. Without a CNPJ and a local representative, banks will not engage.
Do I need a resident director?
Yes. The administrator of a Brazilian company must live in Brazil, and foreign shareholders must appoint a resident attorney. Foreign shareholders also need a Brazilian tax number: CPF for individuals, CNPJ for entities. This is the law, not a bank preference.
How long does it take to open a company account?
Incorporation and getting the CNPJ take weeks; the account itself takes anywhere from days to several weeks after filing. Brazilian banks want a representative in the branch in person to sign the signature card. Digital banks are mostly built for residents.
How do currency transfers work?
The real is not freely convertible: any transfer abroad goes through an authorised bank under an FX contract stating the purpose and operation code. Holding a foreign currency account inside Brazil is possible only in a narrow set of cases. Every operation needs paperwork, so plan payments in advance.
