Personal accounts: India

An honest assessment before work starts, the quote is fixed in writing.

We assess your chances against your profile, prepare the compliance file, help you present your source of funds properly and handle communication with the bank until it decides. The final decision always rests with the bank, so no one can guarantee an opening - careful preparation simply improves the odds.

We quote the exact cost for this country after a short consultation: it depends on the bank and your residency. The quote is fixed in writing before work starts.

FAQ

Can a foreigner open a personal bank account in India?
A resident savings account is realistic only if you actually live in India on a valid long stay visa, and the bank will test your status under exchange control rules. Tourists effectively cannot get one, beyond narrow time limited options. Applying from abroad with just a passport does not work.
What is the difference between NRE and NRO accounts?
An NRE account holds rupees funded from abroad, and both balance and interest can be repatriated freely. An NRO account is for income earned inside India - rent, dividends, pension - and remittances out of it are capped annually and run through tax formalities. There is also the FCNR deposit, held in foreign currency. These accounts are for non-resident Indians and people of Indian origin.
Can I open an Indian bank account remotely?
For non-resident Indians this is standard: forms and copies are attested by a consulate, a notary or an overseas branch, and some banks offer video based verification. For a foreign national with no Indian origin, a remote route barely exists. Attestation requirements are strict.
Do I need a PAN, and how is the account taxed?
A PAN is needed for almost every transaction and withholding, and without it tax is deducted at higher rates. India participates in CRS and FATCA, so account data goes to your country of tax residence. NRO interest is taxable in India while NRE interest is not, which is worth planning around.
