Personal accounts: New Zealand

An honest assessment before work starts, the quote is fixed in writing.

We assess your chances against your profile, prepare the compliance file, help you present your source of funds properly and handle communication with the bank until it decides. The final decision always rests with the bank, so no one can guarantee an opening - careful preparation simply improves the odds.

We quote the exact cost for this country after a short consultation: it depends on the bank and your residency. The quote is fixed in writing before work starts.

FAQ

Can I open a New Zealand bank account before I move?
Some banks accept applications from incoming migrants before arrival, but the account only becomes fully usable once you land and verify your identity in person with a passport and proof of address. Plan for a prepared account rather than a working one until you get there.
Do I need an IRD number for a personal account?
You can open the account without one, but interest on your balance is then taxed at source at a higher default rate. You apply for the IRD number after arrival, and the steps overlap, so most people sort the account and the number in the same few weeks.
Can a non-resident open a New Zealand account remotely?
Fully remote, with no plans to move, is realistically not on offer. The AML rules push banks towards in-person verification, and applications from people with no connection to the country are usually declined without explanation.
Will my home tax office find out about my New Zealand account?
Yes. New Zealand takes part in CRS, so the bank records your tax residency and reports the account for exchange. If you become a New Zealand tax resident, also look into the local rules for new migrants, which treat some foreign income differently for a limited period.
