FAQ

Can a non-resident open a bank account in Slovakia?

An EU citizen usually can, with an ID document and an address. Non-EU applicants without a residence permit are onboarded reluctantly - the bank wants to see a link to the country, such as work, study, property or family.

Do I need residency to open a Slovak account?

Not strictly in every case, but a residence permit and a Slovak address make it simpler and cheaper. Without them some banks decline or offer only a limited package.

Can I open the account online?

Some banks offer remote onboarding with video identification, but generally for residents and holders of EU documents. Non-residents are typically asked to visit a branch.

Will I have to prove where my money came from?

Yes. For meaningful inflows the bank asks for source-of-funds evidence such as a contract, income statement or proof of an asset sale. Slovakia is in CRS, so account data is reported to your country of tax residence.
