Can a non-resident open a bank account in Sri Lanka?

Yes. Foreign currency accounts for non-residents let you bring money in from abroad and send it back out again. Rupee accounts for non-residents are much more restricted in what you can do with them.

Do I need a residence visa to open an account in Sri Lanka?

For a non-resident foreign currency account a passport and visa stamp are usually enough. For full rupee accounts, loans and cards the bank will want residence or work status.

Can I take my money out of Sri Lanka later?

Funds brought in from abroad into a non-resident foreign currency account generally go back out freely. Money earned locally in rupees is harder to move and needs proof of source and of taxes paid.

Is Sri Lanka part of CRS?

Yes, Sri Lanka takes part in automatic exchange of tax information. Account data for tax non-residents is reported to their home country, so the account is not hidden from anyone.
