The National Innovation Visa (subclass 858), also known as the Distinguished Talent Visa, is a prestigious Australian immigration program offering a direct pathway to permanent residence for talented individuals. In 2026 the program continues under its modernized name, but the essence remains the same: permanent residency for candidates with outstanding merit.

Legal basis

The visa is governed by Australian migration law with strict selection criteria. To qualify, you must meet all of the following:

  • Outstanding achievements. Your level must significantly exceed the industry norm and hold international significance — in your profession, sport, arts, or academic research.
  • Benefit to Australia. You must show potential to contribute substantially to Australia's economic, scientific, or cultural development.
  • Employability. You must demonstrate you can establish yourself in Australia in your field — for example through a job offer or the ability to run a business.
  • Nomination. A nominator is mandatory — an Australian citizen or permanent resident, an eligible New Zealand citizen, or an Australian organization with a national reputation in your field.
  • Age. There is no formal age limit — you may apply at any age.
  • English language. At least Functional English is required, for example an IELTS score of 4.5 or higher. Without it you can still apply, but you will need to pay a Second Installment of the visa charge.
  • Health and character. Standard requirements for all immigrants: a medical examination and police clearance.

If you don't yet have a public profile, additional case-building work may be necessary. On a free consultation we assess your chances.

Benefits of Australia's talent visa

Permanent residency immediately

No interim stages — as soon as your visa is granted, you and your family become permanent residents of Australia.

Relocate with your whole family

You can include your spouse or partner and children in the application. Family members receive the same PR rights: education, healthcare, work.

Access to Medicare and education

Access to healthcare under Medicare and subsidized medicines. Children attend public schools for free, and PR holders pay domestic tuition rates at university.

Independence from an employer

No employer, sponsor, or major investment required. Applications from talented candidates are processed with priority and faster than many other visas.

How to get the talent visa: step by step

Assess your eligibility

Honestly evaluate whether your achievements are truly distinguished by international standards, and prepare on the other requirements — English, health, character.

Find a nominator

You need a person or organization in Australia with a strong reputation in your field, willing to confirm your talent and complete the nomination form (Form 1000).

Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI)

Detail your achievements, attach evidence, and provide your nominator's details. Waiting time for an invitation ranges from weeks to months.

Prepare documents

Passport, evidence of achievements, nomination letter, English evidence, medical certificates and police clearance — all translated and certified as required.

Lodge the visa application

After the invitation, you apply for subclass 858 via ImmiAccount and pay the visa charge — about AUD 4–5k for the main applicant in 2026. Decisions typically take 1–3 months.
