FAQ

Can a foreign company open a bank account in Belgium?
It can, but Belgian banks are very selective about companies with no Belgian footprint. The realistic route is a Belgian entity (BV/SRL or NV/SA) with a local address, real activity and at least a director or accountant in the country. A foreign company with no Belgian presence is usually turned down.
Do I need an account before incorporating?
Yes. Cash contributions to share capital go into a blocked account and the bank issues a certificate for the notary. The account is released after registration. This is a separate step and does not replace full corporate onboarding.
What documents does the bank want?
An extract from the companies register, the articles, ownership structure and UBO details (Belgium runs a UBO register), directors' passports, a business description, expected turnover, counterparty countries and contracts. Banks also probe the company's actual link to Belgium and its tax residence.
What if every bank refuses?
Belgium has a basic banking service for businesses: a Belgian-registered company refused by several banks can apply to have a provider assigned for basic payment services. It gives no credit or complex products, but it lets you pay and get paid. Many companies also use licensed EU payment institutions alongside a bank.
