Business accounts: Costa Rica

An honest assessment before work starts, the quote is fixed in writing.

We assess your chances against your profile, prepare the compliance file, help you present your source of funds properly and handle communication with the bank until it decides. The final decision always rests with the bank, so no one can guarantee an opening - careful preparation simply improves the odds.

We quote the exact cost for this country after a short consultation: it depends on the bank and your residency. The quote is fixed in writing before work starts.

FAQ

Can a foreigner open a company account in Costa Rica?
Yes, provided the company is registered locally, holds a cedula juridica and has a legal representative the bank can identify. State and private banks apply different standards, but paperwork and questions about your activity are guaranteed either way. A face-to-face meeting with the representative is effectively mandatory.
Do I need a local director?
The law allows foreign directors and shareholders, but the bank wants someone with a local ID, usually a representative holding a DIMEX or resident status. The company also needs a local registered agent. In practice this is settled by each bank's policy rather than by statute.
What does Costa Rican compliance require?
Costa Rica applies strict know-your-customer rules: an activity questionnaire, documented origin of capital, and an assessment of expected turnover and counterparties. Companies with no real activity in the country have a harder time. Foreign documents generally need an apostille and a translation.
How long does it take to open a company account?
Usually several weeks; state banks are slower but their requirements are more predictable. Refusals happen, especially for companies with foreign owners and no local operations. Many businesses run international payment providers alongside the bank for overseas clients.
