Personal accounts: Costa Rica

An honest assessment before work starts, the quote is fixed in writing.

We assess your chances against your profile, prepare the compliance file, help you present your source of funds properly and handle communication with the bank until it decides. The final decision always rests with the bank, so no one can guarantee an opening - careful preparation simply improves the odds.

We quote the exact cost for this country after a short consultation: it depends on the bank and your residency. The quote is fixed in writing before work starts.

Prices are indicative and cover our work on a typical case. We confirm the exact quote in writing after a short call - you know the final number before we start. Government fees and bank tariffs are billed separately unless explicitly included.

FAQ

Can a non-resident open a bank account in Costa Rica?
It is possible but the options are narrow: state banks mainly serve people with a DIMEX, while some private banks will consider non-residents with a complete file. Terms and fees for non-residents are usually worse. There are no guarantees; the bank decides.
Do I need residency?
With residency and a DIMEX the process is straightforward and cheap; without one it comes down to each bank's and each branch's policy. Most people who relocate open the account after their residency comes through. A tourist stamp does not impress local banks.
What source of funds documents will they ask for?
The usual set: proof of income from work, business, pension or investments, tax documents and statements from foreign accounts. Large inbound transfers trigger their own review. The clearer the chain from source to account, the fewer questions you get.
How does tax reporting and CRS work here?
Costa Rica takes part in automatic exchange of information, and you declare your tax residency when opening the account. Holding an account does not make you a Costa Rican tax resident; presence and centre of life do. As a rule you pay tax where you are resident.
