FAQ

Can a foreigner open a bank account in Bosnia and Herzegovina?
Yes. Non-residents can open an account on a foreign passport; local currency rules allow it and requirements are lighter than in the EU. The bank will want a form, a stated purpose and usually a local identification or tax number. Remote opening is rare here.
Do I need a residence permit?
No, it is not required. But with residency and a local address you get a wider product range: cards, credit, a fully functional mobile bank. Without it the account is often limited to basic operations.
What documents do I need?
A passport, the bank's application form, address proof, and an explanation of your source of funds for anything sizeable; foreign documents need a sworn translation. For large incoming amounts the bank will ask for supporting paperwork, not a verbal explanation.
Will my home tax office find out?
Bosnia and Herzegovina is outside the EU and the reach of automatic exchange is narrower than in EU states, but do not treat it as opacity: the bank still collects your tax residence details and a country's exchange status changes over time. Reporting the account at home remains your obligation.
