Personal accounts: Canada

An honest assessment before work starts, the quote is fixed in writing.

We assess your chances against your profile, prepare the compliance file, help you present your source of funds properly and handle communication with the bank until it decides. The final decision always rests with the bank, so no one can guarantee an opening - careful preparation simply improves the odds.

We quote the exact cost for this country after a short consultation: it depends on the bank and your residency. The quote is fixed in writing before work starts.

FAQ

Can a non-resident open a bank account in Canada?
Yes, Canadian banks do open accounts for non-residents, but almost always with an in-person branch visit, a passport and a second piece of ID. Remote onboarding is normally reserved for people arriving on a visa or through a newcomer programme. Every case still comes down to the bank's own decision.
Do I need a SIN or residency to open an account?
You do not need resident status for a basic chequing account, though the bank will ask for an address and your reason for opening it. A SIN is required for interest-bearing and investment accounts, because the bank reports that income to the tax authority. Without a SIN you are usually limited to a non-interest chequing account.
What is the minimum balance and monthly fee?
The standard Canadian model is a monthly account fee that the bank waives if you keep an agreed minimum balance. The exact numbers depend on the bank and the package, and non-residents are typically offered less favourable terms than residents. Check the fee schedule before you sign, not after.
Does a Canadian bank report my account abroad?
Yes. Canada takes part in CRS and FATCA, so the bank establishes your tax residency and passes account data to the CRA, which shares it with your home tax authority. Refusing to answer residency questions gets you declined or frozen, not private.
