FAQ

Can a foreigner open a company account in Egypt?
Yes, once the company is registered in Egypt through GAFI and holds a tax card and a commercial registry entry. Foreign ownership is permitted in most sectors. Banks generally will not open an account for an offshore company with no Egyptian registration.
What does an Egyptian bank need from a new company?
The commercial registry extract, tax card, articles of association, signatory documents and proof that capital has been paid in. The bank will ask about the activity, counterparties and expected currency flows. Foreign documents need legalisation and Arabic translation.
Are there currency controls in Egypt?
Egypt spent several years with a foreign currency shortage and restrictions on transfers and import payments. Conditions improved after the move to a more flexible exchange rate in 2024, but Central Bank of Egypt rules change. Plan for delays and per-payment documentation requirements.
Can a company hold a USD account in Egypt?
Yes, companies can hold accounts in Egyptian pounds and in foreign currency. Transactions on foreign currency accounts, outbound transfers especially, require supporting documents. Availability of hard currency has been constrained at times, which is worth factoring into cash planning.
