Business accounts: Malaysia

An honest assessment before work starts, the quote is fixed in writing.

We assess your chances against your profile, prepare the compliance file, help you present your source of funds properly and handle communication with the bank until it decides. The final decision always rests with the bank, so no one can guarantee an opening - careful preparation simply improves the odds.

We quote the exact cost for this country after a short consultation: it depends on the bank and your residency. The quote is fixed in writing before work starts.

FAQ

Can a foreign company open a bank account in Malaysia?
Onshore banks prefer Malaysian registered companies over foreign entities. A foreign company with no presence in the country will almost certainly be declined. The alternative is a Labuan structure, Malaysia's international financial centre, which is designed for non-resident business.
Do I need a Malaysian resident director?
For a local company yes - the law requires at least one director ordinarily resident in Malaysia. The bank will also look at signatories and who really controls the business. A nominee director with no authority does not solve the bank's problem and sometimes makes it worse.
Labuan or Kuala Lumpur - what is the difference?
A Labuan company banks with a Labuan banking unit, with foreign currency accounts geared to international activity. An onshore account in the capital is better for operating inside Malaysia and settling in ringgit with local counterparties. Choose based on where your clients are and which currency you hold.
Do I have to visit Malaysia to open a corporate account?
Usually yes: banks ask signatories and the director to appear in person for identification and signing. With Labuan structures part of the process runs through a licensed agent, but a meeting with the bank is still often required. Confirm the specific bank's rules before booking flights.
