FAQ

Can a foreign company open a bank account in Macau?
In theory yes, but Macau banks are built around local and regional business and treat companies with no presence cautiously. Without an office, staff or counterparties in Macau it is hard to explain why you need the account. Many end up banking in Hong Kong or Singapore, where non-resident infrastructure is broader.
Do I need a local company and office in Macau?
In practice yes: a Macau registered company with a local address and a clear activity multiplies your chances. The bank will ask about clients, suppliers, settlement currencies and who actually runs the business. Having a representative who speaks Chinese or Portuguese makes the process much smoother.
How do Macau banks treat gaming and crypto business?
Gaming is tightly regulated here, and any payments around it are checked through the chain of licences and intermediaries. Crypto activity is seen as high risk and most banks avoid it. If your business touches either, expect a long review and a realistic chance of refusal.
How long does corporate onboarding take in Macau?
It depends on the bank and your paperwork, but expect weeks plus follow up requests. Documents often need translation and certification, which adds time. Start early and do not tie urgent payments to the opening date.
